Good Clean Fun- Aquadoodle and Bath Blizzard

October 30th, 2008 by Elizabeth

For this month’s Team Mom sampling, I got two great products to review, both of which have been in daily use since the boxes arrived. The first is the Aquadoodle drawing mat from Spin Master. This idea is so simple, it’s genius. It’s simply a thick mat that you spread out, and it comes with a pen that you fill with water that has a sponge tip. Your child presses the tip of the pen to the mat, and it turns blue, letting them “draw” on the mat, with water! No mess like with markers or paint! The edges of the mat even have step by step directions for turning simple shapes into a girl, a house, a car, and more. Like this:

The downside of this toy is that the pictures only last until the water dries, which is just a few minutes. Also, the mat has to be left unrolled to completely dry before being rolled up for storage, otherwise the surface can get moldy. At only $24.99 for a mat and a pen, I think this is perfect for taking on trips to Grandma’s house for the holidays! It will keep kids entertained without the risk of a mess. Even my nine year old and his friend sat down and drew on it for a while!

The second item we received is the Bath Blizzard bubble maker from Kid Kleen. It’s been advertised heavily on TV so it might sound familiar to you, although the one on TV comes with soap molds, and mine didn’t. But that’s okay, I don’t need my daughter making a mess with soap in the tub ) So what we did get is the Bath Blizzard bubble maker, a strap for hanging it, and a small bottle of bubbles. The directions for getting it to work were easy to follow, although it calls for 4 “C” batteries which we didn’t have on hand, so I had to run out and get those first. Also, the strap has to be attached to the Bath Blizzard in a certain way so it will hang over the faucet of the tub. I couldn’t get it to stay on but my husband finally figured it out. The only problem with the strap is that not everyone has a tub faucet that will hold it. Ours does because we have an “old fashioned” tub that uses a small knob you pull up on to plug the faucet. Otherwise, it would have been helpful if the Bath Blizzard had come with suction cups to attach it to the side of the tub instead.

The bubbles that come with it are not thick like bubble bath, they are more like the bubbles you get in jars to blow through a wand. Kaitlyn didn’t seem to mind, she was just excited to see bubbles in her bath!

Thanks again Team Mom for providing us with these fun water toys that are sure to be in use for a long time!

Holiday Gift Guide-What to Give Someone Who Likes To Cook

October 30th, 2008 by Elizabeth

I’ve been doing a lot more cooking this past year, and one thing I’ve come to realize is that it’s important to use good quality appliances and kitchen utensils. For example, and this is kind of embarrassing, but I sort of melted the bottom of a plastic pancake turner because I used it to make an omelet. Did you know that plastic MELTS if it touches something hot for too long? LOL

You know what’s perfect for stirring hot eggs in a pan? A silicone spatula, which I had read about in cooking magazines but hadn’t purchased, until I was sent one for a gift. I also learned a valuable lesson about how NOT to treat nonstick Cookware when I stirred a pot of spaghetti sauce with a metal spoon and scratched the heck out of the bottom. Oops. So my first gift suggestion is, for a person on your gift list who likes to cook, buy them a good silicone spatula. Although it looks like rubber, silicone is actually a heat-resistant material that also won’t scratch pots and pans.

My second gift suggestion, and one that’s sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone who opens the gift, is a piece of Le Creuset Cookware. Made of cast iron and coated with enamel, Le Creuset pieces can go on top of the stove and in the oven (lids with knobs can be heated up to 375 degrees). The enamel coating is impermeable to stains, and can even be used to marinate food before cooking. Not only that, but Le Creuset Cookware is beautifully designed. The pieces can get expensive but a rectangular or oval baking dish is very affordable and is a wonderful gift idea for someone you know who loves to cook.

Here’s a suggestion- purchase a Le Creuset baking dish and a silicone spatula. Wrap them together with a new dish towel and potholder set for the perfect gift for anyone! I hope this helps someone reading this cross a gift off of their list of things to buy!

Give the Gift of Fitness With Aetrex

October 29th, 2008 by Elizabeth

If someone on your gift list this year is a runner, walker, cross-trainer, hangs out at the gym, or needs well-fitting and highly supportive athletic shoes, I have just the brand for you to check out. Aetrex Worldwide has been caring about the health of people’s feet for three generations! Based in New Jersey, the Schwartz family has been responsible for unrivaled innovations in pain-relieving footwear and foot care products.

Aetrex knows running after those little ones is no easy task, so they offer customized comfort through iStep, a digital foot analysis device (found in independent retailers across the country where Aetrex is sold), which measure everything from shoe size to arch type and pressure points, free of charge. After stepping on the iStep for 30 seconds, customers receive a “blueprint” of their feet, and recommendations for customized insoles. So when combined with an Aetrex shoe, they are getting footwear that is comfortable and customized for their footcare needs.

I received a pair of Aetrex Women’s High Performance Runners to try for myself, and let me tell you what- these shoes make me feel like I could FLY. See, these shoes not only have regular cushioning, but they also have two removable insole layers. Every time I take a step, it’s like I’m not even feeling the impact of the ground. I feel like I could walk forever in these shoes! And yes, they are running shoes, but let’s not push it, people ;) Check out how cool these look:

In addition to the cushioning in the shoe AND the two removable insole layers that let you customize the fit, Aetrex shoes also come with another insole called a Mosaic. It looks like a regular insole except it’s made up of tiny squares. After the wearer has the iStep evaluation that reveals the pressure points on their feet, it tells them exactly which of the little squares to remove, to allow for maximum support and cushioning. These shoes are like magic, I’m telling you. Here’s another cool photo:

Don’t let the price tag scare you (approximately $120), if someone you know wants to be more active but pain in their feet is preventing it, these shoes could really make a difference. Giving someone the gift of being able to move comfortably, now that would be a special gift!

Review of Swiffer Dust and Shine Spray

October 28th, 2008 by Elizabeth

Have I ever mentioned that my very first product review (on my blog Table for Five) was for the new redesigned Swiffer Sweeper? Ever since then, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for Swiffer products. I own the WetJet, I buy the Swiffer Duster with the extendable handle (which saves me climbing up and down off of stepstools to dust the tops of windowsills), I buy the regular Swiffer cloths and use them for hand dusting and in the sweeper, and now I have a new Swiffer product to love (did I use the word SWIFFER ENOUGH TIMES in that last run-on sentence?).

In fact, it was my dear friend Charlie from MS&L Worldwide who sent me that first Swiffer Sweeper to review, and two and a half years later, we are still teaming up to spread the word about how awesome Swiffer products are. Thanks Charlie! Your next Big John’s Steak & Onion sandwich is on me ;)

So. Swiffer Dust and Shine Spray. It cleans and conditions wood, leather, marble, granite, and laminate, and in one fine mist spray it polishes, cleans and conditions. I used it on all the wood surfaces in my living room last weekend, and I was really pleased with how it performed. My end tables and coffee table got clean and shiny without any sticky or greasy residue left behind. The spray comes in three fragrances- Lavender Vanilla, Citrus Zest, and Tropical Sunrise. I got the Citrus Zest and it left a pleasantly orangey scent around the room.

Once again, Swiffer makes a product that does what it says and makes cleaning more enjoyable-and that’s why I continue to review and recommend their products! I hope I’ll still be at it in two more years )

Make Paper Flowers with Rosetta!

October 28th, 2008 by Elizabeth

As told in the story of Tinker Bell, coming out tomorrow on DVD, there are different types of fairies responsible for different parts of nature. Rosetta is a Garden Fairy, whose job is to make the beautiful flowers that bloom. Fairies love when they find “lost things” in Pixie Hollow, and they usually find clever things to make from them. You can be just like Rosetta and enjoy Springtime any time of the year by creating your own blooming flower garden out of paper. Use these lost things found in your home to create your own colorful garden of flowers.

Have fun making your flowers, and don’t forget to pick up the Tinker Bell DVD tomorrow!

Still need a Halloween Costume?

October 25th, 2008 by Elizabeth

Do you still need to buy a Halloween costume for a child or for yourself? Check out all the great costumes still available on Halloween Party Store.com! Family Review Network gave me the opportunity to choose a costume from the site, so I let Nathan look over the choices with me and he picked Iron Man. It’s a really hot costume this year! I chose the largest size available which was 10-12, and unfortunately for Nathan, it was too small. The site puts a size chart right on each page, and I thought Nathan was within the weight range for that size, but then I weighed him and he is actually bigger. So he won’t be able to wear the costume, but I’ll hold on to it and pass it on to a friend.

So my suggestion is, make sure to scroll down the page and look at the size chart, and if you aren’t sure what size your child wears, weigh them before you order! There’s still a great selection of infant, toddler, children’s, and adult costumes, shipping on orders under $50.00 is only $6.99, and orders are shipped the same day using Express or Priority shipping. Don’t paw through picked-over racks at Target or Wal-Mart looking for that costume your child MUST have, find it at Halloween Party Store and have it delivered the next day!
