Meet the newest member of our family, our Karito Kid Zoe

Post by: Elizabeth on July 3rd, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

There are dolls, and then, there are DOLLS. When Lisa from Kidstuff PR emailed me about KidsGive and their amazing Karito Kids dolls, I showed the images to Kaitlyn and asked her what she thought. I didn’t try to guide her towards any one doll, and she pointed to Zoe and said, “can you get her for me?” So, I asked, and Kidstuff came through! I want to thank them right up front, because this is not an inexpensive doll, people. At our local educational toy store, this doll sells for $99.00. I’m going to tell you and show you exactly why that is not too much money to spend on one doll. Meet Zoe:

The Karito Kids World Collection launched in summer 2007 with five doll and book sets:

• Zoe and book “The Manhattan Menace” • Wan Ling and book “Shanghai Secret” • Lulu and book, “Nairobi Nightmare” • Pita and book, “Mexico Mystery” • Gia and book, “Florence Fiasco”
• A sixth doll, Piper from Australia and her book, “Sydney Scandal,” joins the collection in 2008.

Karito [`ka-ree`-toe] noun. Etymology: from the constructed international language, Esperanto, a universal second language created to foster peace and international understanding. 1: charity, 2: love of one’s neighbor

Zoe is dressed in the height of Manhattan kid fashion (or so the box says), and comes with a hardback book and her own passport. The only problem we have is that her hat won’t stay on. But look at how beautiful her hair is:

I love her beautifully detailed face, although her joints are so moveable that her head rotates around on her neck. One night we were sitting on the couch, Kaitlyn, Nathan, myself, and Zoe, and Nathan suddenly says “MOM. I swear that doll just turned it’s head and LOOKED at me!” More likely he just bumped the doll and the head rotated, but his reaction was kind of funny ) Here’s her sweet face:

From the press release:

Karito Kids® World Collection is an award-winning new line of ethnically authentic international dolls and books, designed to empower kids to become globally aware and participate in helping other children around the world. Parent company KidsGive believes that children are naturally charitable and only need to be given the opportunity. They approach this goal through a methodology that can be summed up quite simply as “the more you play, the more you give.”
Kids need no instructions to teach them how to play house. Playing “world” is a little different, so KidsGive has created a simple yet effective way to help teach children that every purchase helps another child. When a child gets their first doll, book or accessory, they receive a special code and are invited to “activate” it on the Karito Kids website, www.karitokids.com. Next, the child can read about four charitable causes that KidsGive supports through Plan USA, a children’s focused charity that delivers an impressive 80% of all funds directly to programs. After learning what life is like for children in other parts of the world, they can choose the cause they want to support. KidsGive donates 3 percent of the retail price of all products to Plan USA.

So, your child gets an amazingly detailed doll to play with, and a chance to directly help a child in another country. And while Kaitlyn chose the doll from Manhattan and not one of the world dolls, I’ve been talking to my boys about it and they are going to help me decide which charity to support with our code. The donations that the four charities have received so far are just amazing:

38% of children who “voted” on their favorite cause through the Karito Kids website directed funds to aid the “Health Project” in Kenya. This money can now buy 15,720 mosquito nets helping children in 357 remote villages.

24% of children directed funds to aid the “Food Project” in China. This has helped children in 13 rural schools which can now purchase 4630 chickens and the eggs they produce for food.

23% of children directed funds to aid the “Homes Project” in Honduras. This can help families live in enclosed homes by building 12 mason homes to be clean, safe and healthy.

15% of children directed funds to aid the “School Project” in Mali. This can now purchase 1,925 textbooks for 976 kids in Mali.

See? Amazing! I am so proud to be helping spread the word about the Karito Kids World Collection of dolls and books. I urge you, if you have a child to buy a gift for, or for your own child, to consider purchasing a Karito Kid doll to not only have a beautiful doll, but to have a chance to make a difference in the life of another child. See www.karitokids.com to learn more about the company’s products and online games, or visit www.kidsgive.com to learn more about the company and its charitable mission.

Copy this code to your website to display this banner!

If you have children and you’ve never been to a Build A Bear Workshop, it’s a pilgrimage you must make. Because it is an experience like none other. Everything about BABW screams FUN and YOU WANT THIS and BUY US NOW to kids of all ages! We don’t have BABW here in Lansing, so I was thrilled when I got the email asking if I would do this giveaway, because I also got this for Kaitlyn:

THAT, my friends, is the new Tropical Hello Kitty from Sanrio, exclusively available at Build-A-Bear Workshop! She has a toasty golden glow to her fur from her time spent in the tropics (although it doesn’t send a good message about sunscreen use, but I’m willing to overlook that because she is just so darn cute). She has a pretty silk flower tucked behind her ear, a sleeveless pink and orange souvenir t-shirt from her trip to Hawaii, and a ruffled denim mini. She’s also soft and huggable!

There’s a whole line of different outfits available for Tropical Hello Kitty, which you can see here. Since mine didn’t come with the silver purse and sandals shown there, I assume those are accessories I can purchase separately. But look at all the fun choices! Now, if Hello Kitty isn’t your thing, don’t worry-the winner of this giveaway can use their $25 gift card towards the purchase of anything at Build-A-Bear, including Bears, Dogs, Bunnies, Kitties, and World Wildlife Fund Friends. Gift cards can be used at any Build-A-Bear or friends2Bmade store in the U.S., or online at www.buildabear.com, www.friends2Bmade.com, or www.buildadino.com.

Enter to winthis $25 gift card by leaving a comment on this entry. Because the gift card is in dollars, it’s open to U.S. only. Please use your real first name and a valid email address when you leave your comment. Enter by Tuesday, July 15th at 9:00 AM EST. One winner will be chosen at random and contacted for their mailing address.

To choose the four winners of the reversible Jellybean Baby Slings, I went to random.org, chose the list randomizer, and went through each comment one by one. For every commenter who said they had placed one of the giveaway week badges on their blog, I visited the blog and checked that the badge was there. I swear it wasn’t on purpose!

The Capessa Blogger Contest begins at 12:01 AM Pacific Time on June 10, 2008 and ends at 11:59 PM Pacific Time on July 10, 2008

WOW!!!!! Is that a contest or WHAT?? I wish they would pick as many winners as they have prize packs though, because that means I’m competing to be the ONLY WINNER! Now, Capessa wants to know what I think of the site, right? So, let’s take a look at it:

My favorite part of Capessa is the blogs. “Confessions of a Middle Aged Beauty Queen” gives excellent tips on what products to use, and why you don’t need to spend a fortune on skin care products. “Travel Diva” has great tips for getting through airport security faster and with less stress. I also enjoy the videos which you find in the right column under “Related Stories”. What I like best about Capessa is that I can pop over there and whatever I’m in the mood for, be it something about beauty or parenting or health, I can read articles about just that topic without having to wade through link after link looking for just what I want. The site is very well organized and easy to search. I really can’t think of any suggestions for improvement!

Screen Routine Facial Sunscreens

Post by: Elizabeth on July 1st, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

From Parent Reviewers I received samples of a new line of facial sunscreens from Screen, Inc. called Screen Routine. Sunscreen commercials always show people rubbing it on their arms or backs, but you never see TV commercials for people applying sunscreen to their faces, and that’s a shame. My son went to a pool party before I received the samples, and didn’t apply any of the sunscreen I sent with him to his face, and came home with a burned forehead, nose, and cheeks. Screen Routine has come up with a line of products that protects the facial skin of tweens through adults.

When we went to the zoo last weekend, I applied the “tween” screen to my 9 year old, the “teen” screen to my 11 year old (who is already developing breakouts on his face), “man” screen to my husband, and “chic” screen to my own face. All the products started out white but blended in quickly with no oily residue. Of the four formulas, only the Tween Screen is scented for some reason, and it has a pleasant tropical fragrance. The other three formulas are unscented. Shop the Screen, Inc. website to purchase individual 3 ounce tubes or buy it by the case. A tube is $14.00, which might seem pricey, but this is a quality product. I say $14.00 is worth it to avoid a painful and dangerous facial sunburn!

Giveaway Week continues-Win Terracycle all natural cleaners!

Post by: Elizabeth on June 30th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

I am just thrilled to be reviewing and giving away these cleaners from Terracycle, a company known for creating an all-natural fertilizer made from worm poop. But don’t worry, there’s no worm poop in these terrific cleaning sprays, just concentrated essences of plants, shrubs, fruits, herbs and grasses with natural minerals and water. Even better, TerraCycle then packages the ready-to-use cleaners in reused soda bottles with end-run spray tops, making one of the most affordable and environmentally friendly cleaning products on the market.

I received three cleaning products to try for myself, and I am happy to say that all of them work really well. I used TerraCycle Natural All Purpose Cleaner all around my house as I cleaned this weekend. It took care of spilled shampoo that had dried on the floor of the bathtub, coffee stains on the kitchen counter, and mystery gook that was on the walls in the hallway. I talked to James from Terracycle on the phone about the giveaway, and I asked him to please find out for me exactly what oils are used in the cleaner, because the smell…well, it smells like the people who live in East Lansing near M.S.U., the ones who buy their shampoo and laundry soap at the Food Co-Op. I suspect patchouli.

TerraCycle Natural Bathroom Cleaner made my shower, sink, and toilet sparkle and I like knowing that I’m not leaving harmful chemical residues behind. And ammonia-free TerraCycle Natural Window Cleaner got all the toothpaste globs off the mirror and took care of the dog’s nose print streaks on the picture window in the family room. In addition to these, Terracycle also makes a Drain Maintainer and Cleaner that is biologically friendly and packaged in 100% recycled containers. If these cleaners are strong enough to tackle my messy house, they are sure to work in yours! I’m naming Terracycle cleaners a MOMREVIEWS FABULOUS FIND and sending them a badge they can use, too!

About TerraCycle, Inc.
Tom Szaky, a 25-year old entrepreneur and Princeton University dropout, founded TerraCycle (www.terracycle.net) his freshman year. The company debuted its revolutionary worm poop plant food packages in reused soda bottles at Wal*Mart and The Home Depot in 2005. TerraCycle products are the first consumer products to earn the right to carry the Zerofootprint™ seal. The seal signifies that the materials and manufacturing process used to produce its products have virtually no negative environmental repercussions. In July 2006, Inc. Magazine named TerraCycle, “The Coolest Little Start-Up in America.”

**GIVEAWAY: Three winners will get three products-the Bathroom Cleaner, the All Purpose Cleaner, and the Window Cleaner. Products will be shipped directly from Terracycle, and can be shipped anywhere within the continental United States and Canada. All you need to do to enter is leave a comment on this post with your first name and a VALID email address. Honestly people, stop wasting my time entering with fake email addresses. Ready to be debt free?

Post by: Elizabeth on June 30th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

No, I’m not giving away a million dollars, not that I wouldn’t if I had the chance! I’ve been asked to share a website with you called No Debt Today, which has programs to help you with debt reduction. They specialize in helping people tackle what might seem like an impossible amount of debt, starting with a free, no-obligation debt consultation. No Debt Today offers three types of programs:
*If you need to consolidate a variety of debt both secured and unsecured, they work with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe and then group all your monthly payments into one.
*If you have just credit card debt, No Debt Today can get your total amounts due reduced into one lump sum payoff, or a much lower monthly payment.
*If you need to get caught up on back taxes (local or Federal up to 10 years’ worth), No Debt Today has solutions for that as well.

I’m speaking from experience when I say, don’t let your debt drown you. Use the free debt form on the No Debt Today website to get a free online debt consultation. There is no obligation to do anything and you can take as much time as you like to decide. You don’t have to feel like you are trapped under piles of debt anymore!

Protect your kids when they are online with GuardChild

Post by: Elizabeth on June 30th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

I would say that my husband and I are about as educated as parents can be regarding how to keep our children safe online. We don’t allow them to surf the Web, they can only go to sites that we have approved and bookmarked for them. Of course, once they are on a Web page, they could type just about anything into the browser and go anywhere, but they also know that we are going to be walking by their computers at any time to see what they are doing. And, if necessary, we will use Remote Desktop Management software to allow us to “take over” their computer and see what they are viewing.

It’s scary, isn’t it? I know it is possible to keep kids off the Internet entirely, but my husband works in PC Support and I’m a blogger, which means the Internet is a big part of our lives. I’d much rather teach my children how to be safe while they are online, and not only HOW, but WHY. It’s hard for them to understand that someone who sounds like a kid asking to be their friend on Xbox Live could actually be an adult. They want to watch videos and play games, but I don’t want them seeing porn. So what is a parent to do? Well, Michael Cafarelli founded GuardChild.

GuardChild was founded by a team of parents concerned by the explosion of news reports about child predators frequenting Internet Chat Rooms and exploiting children. We realized a need for a ‘one stop’ website where parents could gather to share their knowledge and experiences, educate themselves about Internet security, and review and purchase the latest child-monitoring software.

The GuardChild Knowledge Center provides FREE resources including toll-free phone numbers for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, links to similar child safety sites like CyberAngels and NetSmartz, articles, safety tips, and recommended reading. The Knowledge Center also explains how to choose Child Protection Software, which is the next part of the site that I want to explain to you.

GuardChild also sells monitoring software for your home computer, with prices starting at just $39.95. Whether you want to simply see what your children view online, chat protection that sends you an email if your child is chatting about a topic that you have set as off-limits, the ability to schedule which times your child can be online, even monitor entire IM conversations, GuardChild has software you can purchase. Should you monitor your child’s “private” IM chats? In my opinion, YES.

The issue of trust revolves around both parents and children understanding what is and isn’t allowed. Monitoring your child’s online activity to make sure they aren’t getting into situations they shouldn’t be in is not spying, it’s PARENTING. Wouldn’t you want to know if your child was discussing drug use, or viewing porn, or even just using inappropriate language in their chats? The Internet has lots of great uses, from educational sites to sites that are fun, but children are not adults and don’t need to be in adult situations, either. Letting your child know that you are paying attention to what they do online lets them know that if they do get into an uncomfortable situation, you’ll be able to step in and be the “bad guy” and get them out of it.

While there are free resources available on GuardChild, there is also a community that costs a very reasonable $19.95 a year to join. With paid membership in the GuardChild Community, you are entitled to:
* Hundreds of websites (with access to thousands more embedded in our sites and new sites added monthly) for family-friendly websites, online safety resources, parent resources, educational websites, and much more (GuardChild has done this research for you, so you don’t have to spend hours online searching for relevant information)
* Articles about online child safety and family Internet use
* GuardChild Community Blog: interact with other parents who share your concerns, learn from online safety experts, and contribute your own articles, advice, and questions
* Discounts on the best web-filtering software and child-monitoring software available.
* Access to a searchable State-by-State Sex Offender Registry
* An Instant Messaging/Chat/Text Messaging/Emoticon Glossary
* Email alerts of new Feature Blog postings and product updates

Post by: Elizabeth on June 27th, 2008 | File Under Uncategorized

A super big thank you to Rebecca from Weber Shandwick, one of the PR firms that really understands how to approach bloggers, for sponsoring this wicked awesome giveaway. Not only did Rebecca approach me about giving products away to my readers, she also sent me a huge box of Suave products including some of the brand new products for 2008. I’ve been using Suave products for years, because Suave does such a great job of making their products look, feel, smell, and work like they should be so much more expensive! If you’ve never tried a Suave product, the next time you are buying something like shampoo, lotion, or deodorant, look to see if there’s a Suave version and try it. I bet you’ll find it is just as good but costs much less!

You can win a terrific prize pack with six Suave products to use! Here is what the five winners of this giveaway will receive:

For Hair:
Suave Professionals Extreme Strength Shampoo, Conditioner and Daily Leave-In Treatment

For Skin:
Suave Professionals Daily Exfoliating Body Wash

For Kids:
Suave Kids 2 in 1 Swim and Sport Shampoo
Suave 24-Hour Protection Deodorant in Tropical Paradise
